Indoor Climbers for Kids | Wooden Frames | Montessori

Wooden climbers for every stage, from a first Pikler triangle to a wall mounted Swedish ladder with monkey bars. All solid wood, all built to let a child set their own pace.

Hazel is our foldable Pikler triangle with a ramp and rocker, the usual starting point around 12 months. Walnut is a wall mounted Swedish ladder that uses almost no floor space and takes attachments as a child grows. Betula is the compact version for smaller rooms, and Sweetgum combines a climbing wall, rope ladder, slide and swing on one frame.

Wooden Climbers for Toddlers and Kids

Climbing is how young children learn what their bodies can do. A good climber gives graded challenges rather than one fixed height, so a child can choose the rung they are ready for and come back to the harder one next month. That is the Montessori principle behind everything in this collection.

Our climbers are FSC-certified pine with non-toxic finishes, built to ASTM and CPSIA standards, with no sharp edges or finger-trap gaps. Most fold flat or mount to a wall, so they fit a playroom, a living room corner or an apartment.

Pikler Triangles and Climbing Arches

A Pikler triangle is usually a child's first climber, and it works from about 10 to 12 months, as soon as a baby can pull to stand. The graded rungs let them climb one step higher each week without being lifted into place. Add a ramp and it becomes a slide and a crawling incline; add a climbing arch and it becomes a rocker, a tunnel and a den.

Foldable Pikler triangle sets collapse flat for storage, which matters when the climber lives in a shared room. Most children use one until around age 4, then move on to a taller frame.

Swedish Ladders and Wall Mounted Climbers

A Swedish ladder wall gym is the most space-efficient climber there is. It anchors into wall studs, sits nearly flush and needs as little as 3 feet of floor depth. What makes it worth the mounting is how far it extends: monkey bars, a rock wall panel, a rope wall, gym rings and a slide can all be added as a child grows, so one frame covers ages 2 through 8 and beyond.

We make Swedish ladders in 79 inch and 95 inch heights, and in modular versions built to take extra panels side by side.

Climbing Walls and Toddler Climbing Gyms

A climbing wall for kids builds grip strength and planning in a way a ladder does not, because every route is a decision. Ours use graded holds on angled panels rather than a vertical face, which suits smaller hands and shorter reaches. On a full toddler climbing gym, a rock wall usually sits alongside a rope ladder, a slide and a swing, so the same frame covers several kinds of movement.

Choosing a Climber by Age

  • 10 to 18 months: A Pikler triangle with a ramp, kept low. A baby climber at this stage is about pulling up, stepping and crawling on an incline.

  • 18 months to 3 years: Triangle plus arch or rocker, or a first wall ladder. Rope ladders and low rock walls become usable.

  • 3 to 5 years: A full climbing frame or Swedish ladder with a slide and swing. Height matters more than features now.

  • 5 and up: Monkey bars, gym rings and a taller wall gym. Attachments keep an existing frame challenging instead of replacing it.

Safety and Setup

A padded mat under any indoor climber is worth the cost, and we make mats shaped to most of our frames. Wall mounted climbers must anchor into studs, with hardware included. Freestanding frames need about 2 feet of clearance on each open side. Every product page lists dimensions, suggested age range and weight limit per child.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is a Pikler triangle for?

From about 10 to 12 months, once a baby can pull to stand, through around age 4. Start with the triangle at its lowest setting and raise it as confidence grows.

What is a Swedish ladder?

A wall mounted wooden ladder with evenly spaced rungs, originally used in school gymnastics. It gives climbing practice in almost no floor space and accepts attachments like monkey bars, rings, a rock wall and a slide.

Are climbing frames safe for toddlers?

Used with a mat, adult supervision and a frame sized for the child, yes. Graded heights let a child climb only as high as they are ready for, which is safer than lifting them onto a platform they cannot reach alone.

How much space does a climber need?

A wall mounted Swedish ladder needs as little as 3 feet of floor depth. A Pikler triangle needs roughly 4 by 3 feet. A full climbing gym with a slide needs about 6 by 8 feet, plus clearance.

Can climbers be used outdoors?

Some models are made for indoor and outdoor use. Indoor-only frames use finishes not intended for prolonged weather exposure, and each product page says which applies.

Do climbers fold away?

Many do. Pikler triangles fold flat, and several climbing frames collapse to about 8 inches deep. Wall mounted ladders stay in place but sit nearly flush against the wall.
