Toddlers (1–3 Years)

Everything we make for ages 1 to 3, when a child goes from first steps to climbing anything they can reach. Wooden playsets, climbers, swings, slides and toddler towers, all sized so a toddler can use them without being lifted into place.

Four places to start. Hazel is a foldable Pikler triangle with a ramp and rocker, usually a first climber. Date is a toddler kitchen tower that brings them up to counter height and converts to a desk. Spruce is an indoor swing set with its own stand. Chestnut folds flat and covers climbing, sliding and swinging on one frame.

Wooden Toddler Gear, Built for Ages 1 to 3

Between one and three, a child stops being carried and starts deciding. They climb before they can safely get down, they want to see what is happening on the counter, and they repeat the same small challenge fifty times until it is theirs. Everything in this collection is built around that.

Toddler scale is the point. Low platforms they can reach unaided, graded rungs they can choose between, rails at the right height and finishes that survive being chewed. All FSC-certified pine with non-toxic finishes, meeting ASTM and CPSIA standards.

Toddler Playsets and Climbing Gyms

A toddler playset works when the lowest rung is reachable and the highest one is a stretch. A toddler climbing gym with a rope ladder, a small rock wall and a short slide gives several kinds of movement on one frame, so the same purchase covers a child who is crawling now and running in a year.

Indoors, foldable frames collapse to about 8 inches deep when the living room needs to be a living room. Outdoors, a low toddler outdoor playset with a bucket swing and a short slide suits ages 1 to 3 without the height of a full backyard set.

Toddler Swings and Slides

A toddler swing needs a harness or a full bucket seat until a child can hold on reliably, usually somewhere around two. Our indoor swing sets come with their own stand, so nothing mounts to a ceiling, and the seat swaps to an open one as balance improves.

A toddler slide should be short, wide and gently angled. Ours attach to climbing frames or stand alone, and several fold flat for storage between uses.

Toddler Towers and Learning Furniture

A toddler tower, sometimes called a learning tower or a learning stool, brings a child safely up to counter height so they can wash hands, stir a bowl or just watch. Enclosed sides and a stable base make it far safer than a step stool, and ours convert into a desk, a chair or a chalkboard when the cooking is done.

Alongside them, Montessori tables, chairs and shelves sized for toddlers let a child fetch their own book and sit down without help, which is most of what independence means at this age.

What to Look for in Toddler Equipment

  • Reachable scale: If a toddler needs lifting onto it, it is too big. Low first rungs and platforms let them start and stop on their own terms.

  • Room to grow: Graded heights and add-on parts keep a frame useful past the toddler years rather than a single season.

  • Stability: A wide base and a solid frame matter more than the number of features. Toddlers lean, pull and test everything.

  • Folding and storage: Gear that folds flat survives contact with a small home far better than gear that does not.

  • Safe finishes: Non-toxic, BPA-free coatings matter at an age when everything gets tasted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can a toddler start climbing?

Most children start on a low Pikler triangle from around 10 to 12 months, once they can pull to stand. Taller frames, rope ladders and rock walls usually come into use between two and three.

What is a toddler tower?

An enclosed wooden step platform that brings a toddler up to counter height safely. Also called a learning tower. Ours fold and convert into a desk, chair or chalkboard.

Are indoor toddler swings safe in a living room?

Yes, with a freestanding frame and clear space in front and behind the swing arc. Ours come with their own stand, so nothing attaches to a ceiling or doorframe.

How long will a toddler playset last?

Frames with graded heights and add-on parts usually stay in use well past age three. A frame with one fixed platform tends to be outgrown within a year.

Do I need a mat under an indoor climber?

On hard floors, yes. We make padded mats shaped to fit most of our indoor frames.

Is assembly difficult?

Most toddler pieces take one or two adults under two hours, with pre-drilled hardware and illustrated instructions. Manuals and videos are linked on each product page.
