What is a wooden playpen?

A wooden playpen is a set of linked wooden panels that form a closed play yard on your floor. It gives a crawling baby a safe space to play, rails to pull up on and room for a parent to sit inside. Avenlur playpens fold flat without tools and build Montessori sensory panels into the walls, and the Avenlur Wooden Baby Playpen was named Best Playpen for Imaginative Play in the Parents 2026 Best for Baby Awards.

What to Look for in a Playpen

Enough floor space

Choose a size with room for your baby, their toys and you. Measure your room first.

Locking joints

Panels should lock firmly together so the play yard holds its shape when your baby pulls on it.

A walk-through door

A door lets you step in and out without climbing over the wall.

Built-in play

Activity, mirror and abacus panels turn the playpen into a play space, not just an enclosure.

Room to expand

Add-on panels let the playpen grow as your baby gets more mobile.

Easy storage

Tool-free panels that fold flat make it simple to put away.

Safety

Playpen Safety Tips

Awake play only

A wooden playpen is not a sleep space. Use a crib or bassinet for naps and nighttime.

Not a gate

Never use playpen panels or doors to block stairs or doorways.

Check the joints

Make sure every panel is locked before each use, and check for loose parts regularly.

Clear the outside

Keep the playpen away from cords, blinds, windows and furniture your baby could reach or climb.

Use a mat on hard floors

A padded mat cushions tumbles as your baby learns to sit and stand.

Stop when they climb

Once your child can climb out, it's time to stop using the playpen.

FAQs

Playpen Questions

What age is a baby playpen for?

Most families start using a playpen once their baby begins rolling and crawling, around 4 to 6 months, and keep using it through pulling up and cruising. Stop using the playpen once your child can climb out.

Is a wooden playpen better than plastic or mesh?

Wooden playpens are sturdy, look like furniture in a living room and give babies rails to grip as they learn to pull up and cruise. Plastic panels are lighter, and mesh play yards are smaller and more portable. Avenlur playpens add built-in sensory panels, so the playpen is a play space rather than just an enclosure.

What size playpen do I need?

A 63 x 63 inch playpen gives one baby, their toys and a parent room to play, and fits most nurseries and living rooms. A 93 x 63 inch playpen has almost 50% more floor space for twins, siblings or bigger rooms. Measure your floor and leave space around the outside before you choose.

Can a baby sleep in a wooden playpen?

No. Avenlur wooden playpens are play yards for supervised awake play. For sleep, use a crib or bassinet with a firm, flat mattress.

Do I need a mat inside the playpen?

On hard floors, yes. A padded mat cushions falls as your baby learns to sit, crawl and stand. The Avenlur playpen mat is sized to fit our playpens.

Can I make my playpen bigger?

Yes. Playpen add-on panels click onto any Avenlur playpen. One 2-pack turns the 63 x 63 inch square into a 93 x 63 inch rectangle, and you can add more packs or shape the panels around your room.

Can I use playpen panels as a baby gate?

No. Playpen panels and doors are not safety gates. Do not use them to block stairs or doorways. Always use the panels connected as a closed play yard.

Is a playpen Montessori?

Montessori favors a safe, prepared space where a child can move and explore freely. A large playpen with sensory panels, open floor space and rails for pulling up does exactly that, especially when you fill it with a few simple, open-ended toys.
