The short answer

For babies, look for pieces that support reaching, rocking and sitting, like a swing with a stand or a bouncer. From about 1, a low Pikler triangle is the classic first climber. From 2 to 3, climbing gyms with slides and swings get daily use. From 4 up, kids want height: jungle gyms, monkey bars and Swedish ladders that grow with them.

FAQs

Questions About Choosing by Age

What is the best playset for a 1 year old?

A low Pikler triangle like the Hazel or the Maple is the most popular first climber. Both support pulling up, stepping and first climbs, and the Hazel adds a slide and rocker that keep it useful for years. Check each listing for its starting age and weight limit.

What is the best playset for a 2 year old?

Two year olds are ready for a low climbing gym with more than one route, like the Cherry, or a jungle gym like the Magnolia, made for ages 2 to 6, once they are ready for a rock wall and a swing.

What are the best indoor playsets for 5 year olds?

Kids this age want height and challenge. The Chestnut, made for ages 2 to 8, and the Sweetgum add rock walls, rope ladders and monkey bars, and a Swedish ladder like the Walnut keeps growing with them.

How do I know if a playset is the right size for my child's age?

Every product page lists its recommended age range, weight limit and dimensions. Our toddler development guide explains what children are learning at each age, and the climber comparison chart puts ages and sizes side by side.
