The short answer

For a toddler, start with a low indoor gym or a Pikler triangle set they can climb on their own. For a playroom, a freestanding gym with a slide, swing, rock wall and monkey bars keeps kids busy for years. For small spaces, choose a foldable gym or a wall gym that takes almost no floor space. Whatever you choose, add a padded mat and about two feet of clear space around it.

Indoor Gyms by Age

Typical ranges. Always check each product’s age and weight limits.

Age What works best
1 year A Pikler triangle set with a ramp and arch, like the Hazel
18 months to 3 years A low toddler gym with a short slide, like the Cherry or Juniper
3 to 5 years A freestanding playset with a rock wall, swing and slide, like the Magnolia or Sweetgum Large
5 years and up Monkey bars, rings, taller platforms and wall gyms, like the Sweetgum XL or Jumbo, Chestnut, Grove or Walnut

Big kids

Indoor Gyms for Kids 5 and Up

Many indoor gyms are sized for toddlers and get outgrown fast. For bigger kids, look for more height, harder routes and higher weight limits. The Sweetgum Jumbo has a 30.1 inch platform and a 66.8 inch slide. Monkey bars, gymnastic rings and trapeze bars give older kids something to work toward. Wall gyms like the Walnut hold 220 lbs per person, so older kids and parents can use them too, and our pull-up bar attachment adds a challenge for kids 8 and up.

FAQs

Indoor Gym Questions

What is the best indoor gym for kids?

It depends on your room and your child’s age. For toddlers, a low gym like the Cherry or a Pikler triangle set is a good start. For a playroom, a freestanding gym like the Magnolia or Sweetgum adds monkey bars, a rock wall, a slide and swings. If floor space is tight, a wall gym like the Walnut or the foldable Grove takes almost none.

What is the best indoor play gym for toddlers?

Look for a low platform, easy steps and a short slide. The Cherry is 43 inches tall and made for 18 months to 5 years, and the Hazel Pikler set suits ages 1 to 6. Both let toddlers climb on their own with an adult close by.

What age is an indoor gym for?

Indoor gyms range from first climbers for 1 year olds to wall gyms that older kids use into the pre-teen years. Match the gym to your child now, and choose one with add-ons or more challenge if you want it to last.

How much space does an indoor gym need?

Measure the gym’s footprint and add about two feet of clear space on each open side. The Magnolia Medium is 51.6 x 43 inches, while the Sweetgum Jumbo is 90.6 x 88.2 inches. Wall gyms need wall width instead of floor space, and the Grove folds to 14 inches deep.

Is an indoor gym good for a 5 year old?

Yes, if it has enough challenge. Look for monkey bars, gymnastic rings, a taller platform and higher weight limits, such as the Sweetgum XL or Jumbo, the Chestnut or a wall gym like the Walnut.

Do I need a mat under an indoor gym?

Yes. A padded mat under and around the gym cushions falls, especially on hard floors. Avenlur makes playset mats sized for many of our gyms.

Can an indoor gym go in an apartment?

Yes. Foldable gyms like the Chestnut, Juniper and Grove fold away when you need the room back, and the Hazel folds flat to slide behind a sofa.

What is a baby play gym?

A baby play gym is a small arch with hanging toys for newborns during floor time. It’s different from an indoor gym for climbing. Once your baby is pulling up and crawling, a Pikler triangle is the usual next step.
